Extending the Housemuseum
Lyon Housemuseum Galleries
by Lyons
The Lyon Housemuseum Galleries extend the original Lyon Housemuseum with a dedicated public gallery for contemporary art, architecture and design. Designed to reflect the angular geometry and spatial organisation of the original Housemuseum, the new building incorporates a series of exhibition spaces around a large central gallery, providing flexibility for both intimate displays and large-scale works and installations. A public forecourt and rear courtyard further extend the exhibition environment beyond the building.
LBA Construction Group delivered the gallery, café, offices and sub-level art store, with the project requiring a high level of precision across both public and exhibition spaces. The sculpted façades are clad in bluestone sourced from Port Fairy, while the 5.5-metre-high central gallery provides a substantial and adaptable space for changing exhibitions.
Careful coordination of the building's structure, finishes and specialist requirements was essential to creating a robust public facility capable of accommodating a diverse program of art, architecture and design.
